Items associated with the inauguration of James Monroe Smith in 1931. They consist of two small inauguration programs indicating the order of speakers and musical performers; a larger program that includes names of attending members of the L.S.U. Board of Supervisors and delegates from other universities, learned societies, and local school systems; two RSVP cards sent to invitees; and two copies of an invitation to the inauguration. Also included are a copy of a letter to faculty from J.G. Lee inviting faculty members to attend a luncheon in honor of delegates and guests and a copy of a letter from James Monroe Smith inviting faculty to attend an alumni banquet preceding the inauguration.

James Monroe Smith was a Louisiana educator and university administrator. He was appointed president of Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College by Huey Long in 1931 and served in that capacity until 1939. During his tenure he spent lavishly on parties and household extravagances, appointed close associates to positions of power, and embezzled nearly a half a million dollars from L.S.U funds.
